When we wait for apple

Sometime this year

I have taken matters into my own hands. In the new video, Miani shows how he used the iMac case and Mac mini to create "the world's first DIY Apple Silicon iMac".

Miani used the iFix disassembly guide to take apart the 2011 27-inch iMac. Please note that this is a pre-designed model, so there is no tapered design on the side. Then, he did some research and found a conversion board that allows you to turn your iMac into an HDMI display.

After completing this process, the 2011 iMac has actually become the Apple Cinema Display, but Miani has not yet completed its quest to create an all-in-one iMac with Apple Silicon built-in. Therefore, he removed the inner liner of the M1 Mac mini from the case and found an installation point inside the iMac.

After installing the Mac mini components into the iMac, the process is basically complete. Miani created the "world's first" all-in-one Apple Silicon iMac. What is impressive is that there are some caveats:

The first problem is that when I first turned on the Magic Mouse and the keyboard were almost unable to connect, and the Wi-Fi speed was very slow. The reason is that the Mac mini, like most Macs, has three antenna connections, and one of the antennas is on the small metal base plate that we removed when we took the Mac mini apart. Therefore, it has only two-thirds of the antenna, and it will definitely suffer from putting it in the metal casing of the iMac.

To solve this problem, Miani re-adjusted one of the metal antenna straps inside the original iMac case to have full-speed Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities. Unfortunately, another problem is that there are no ports. This means that this M1 iMac does not have a USB-C or Thunderbolt connection.

Most importantly, the video is an impressive proof of concept. As Miani pointed out in the video, one of the most interesting things is to see all the white space around the Mac mini parts inside the iMac, especially when you consider that the M1 chip is faster than the Intel i7 chip, in that particular iMac it It is being replaced. .

iMac was first released in 1998 as Apple’s all-in-one desktop computer. The current version (2019 model) offers 21.5" and 27" 4K and 5K displays.

Apple Silicon is Apple's new processor series for the Mac platform. It was announced in 2020, and the first Macs appeared at Apple's "One Thing" event in November 2020. The first is the M1, which first appeared in MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac Mini.
