With the help of this high-tech hacker, you can present your own better video pictures on Zoom, Twitch and Google Hangouts

As the coronavirus crisis continues, many of us still stay indoors, and keeping in touch with people who work and play online has become more important than ever. Upgrading the built-in camera of a laptop for zooming, Google Hangouts, Twitch, etc., has become something that many people are doing. Therefore, many

It is still difficult to find stock in many stores.

So, why not just plug in your own DSLR, GoPro or mirrorless camera and use it as a camera source to keep in touch with friends in video chats and colleagues in video conferences?

Unfortunately, this is not a plug-and-play issue-to make a photographic device work as a webcam, you need some additional kits.

There are exceptions-

with

-Using appropriate menu settings (and the latest firmware), it can be used as a webcam without any additional hardware or software. But these are exceptions to the certification norms.

There are also some software solutions to solve this problem-now all manufacturers have

, Which allows you to turn the camera into a webcam.

However, the best technique is to use a hardware dongle to convert the image from the HDMI socket from the camera to digital form so that the computer (and the application used for streaming) can recognize it as a camera source.

One of the most respected dongles is

– Manufactured by a company that specifically designs peripherals to meet the needs of the online gaming community. The Elgato Cam link has a simple HDMI input (for connecting to your camera) and a USB 3.0 output (for connecting to your computer).

One advantage of this dongle is that if you need the highest resolution, it allows you to transfer 4K at 30fps. It also offers other resolutions, including 1080p at 60fps. And unlike other solutions, this device provides low latency-thus minimizing the delay in the real-time video image being transmitted.

Unfortunately, since everyone finds themselves in the world of FaceTime, Zoom and video conferencing, it is currently difficult to find Elgato Cam Link. Therefore, there are other options, such as Elgato's own HD60 S+ card (actually aimed at gamers, but can perform the same conversion tasks).

The first obvious advantage of using your own camera as a webcam is that it will almost certainly be of better quality than the computer's built-in camera. Most modern DSLRs and mirrorless cameras have excellent low-light performance-and allow you to use fast lenses of various focal lengths in order to get the crop and look you need. Of course, you can place the camera in a position that matches the desktop settings (but you may need a

).

There are some things to be aware of when using our camera as a webcam. Elgato warns you that you need

. But the manufacturer has a

, And clearly shows you how to recognize that your device is working properly even if it is not listed. Essentially, you need a camera that can provide clear output-it can fill the screen frame and there is no overlay on the image. If you can turn off the camera with the main power when shooting, you can also provide you with the best service (to avoid the embarrassment of running out of battery power during a call). You also want to avoid automatically turning off the camera's camera.

Due to the strong demand for webcams due to lock-in, we also noticed that Elgato Cam Link’s inventory is low in some places (but we list below links to those found today).

Elgato Game Capture HD60 S+ is a very concise alternative, it has the same UVC (USB Video Class) driver function, which can turn your camera into a standard streaming media and conference service like a webcam (you can Read Elgato's own content)

For more details, see HD60 S+).

There are other options, such as the dongle made by Magewell. Another possible solution is to use a production switcher-it will allow you to stream video from multiple sources. This

Is a very affordable solution, it can switch between up to four video sources (although it will take up more desktop space compared to the dongle).
